July - September 2010 Additional Article and Photos

My time at the 2010 National Scout Jamboree

Written by Nicholas T.

I was a staff member at the 2010 National Scout Jamboree at Fort A. P. Hill near Bowling Green, Virginia.  The Jamboree was from July 26th to August 4th, 2010.  There were about forty five thousand Scouts and Scouters in attendance.

I was on staff at the Collections Merit Badge.  Our booth had over 1500 Scouts complete our merit badge during the time we were there.

There were two arena shows at the Jamboree.  The first was Wednesday, July 28th, 2010.  The second show was Saturday, July 30th, 2010.

The first show had Eagle Scout Robert Gates who is the Secretary of the Department of Defense, as well as Miss America and the Governor of Virginia speak.  The two millionth Eagle Scout Anthony Thomas, from Minnesota, also spoke.  There was also a showing by the United States Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team.

The second arena show was more elaborate.  The show was broadcast on the internet so that people who were not at the Jamboree could see it.  President Obama gave a speech on video.  Eagle Scout Mike Rowe, host of the show “Dirty Jobs” on the Discovery Channel, was the main speaker.  The show also had various films of scouting history since the beginning in 1910.  There was also a film about the Bechtel Summit in West Virginia, which is where the National Scout Jamboree will be held starting in 2013.  The show was capped off by the music group Switchfoot, and a musical selection by the artist Alex Boye.  There was also an amazing fireworks display at the ending of the show.

Throughout the Jamboree members of Ktemaque Lodge were doing various tasks.  Some were in the Mysterium Compass, while others were in the Merit Badge Midway or in the Subcamps cooking for participants and staff there.
